I think the video says it all. However, you MUST read on to hear my story about last night. It’s the ultimate in making it happen, going against my nature, in a crowd not necessarily as like-minded as could be, etc..
Read between the lines and find opportunities where you may not even expect them. Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, Airplanes!
Here is mine:
‘About Last Night’
I had heard about a local Blogger convention (aka - an evening affair) and understood it to be more of a ‘cultural’ event, then ‘marketing’ event. Hence, I decided not to go.
Last minute I was thinking that right in my backyard are going to be over 100 people who spend a lot of their time doing what I do - staring at this screen I am typing on, and probably at all hours of the day (and night). There has to be some overall chemistry, who knows what can happen.?? Oh, and free food.
I did peg the evening correctly, and therefore am not sure why I was surprised at the lack of conversation about promoting your blog + monetization (which drew laughs from the crowd when it was even suggested). Clearly these people dont know what I know and will be sharing with YOU soon about earning from BLOGGING..
Did you watch my video yet? Well, the funny thing is that I did want to be a little of both ‘wallflower’ and ‘hard to get’.. First of all, I have a long history of thinking that works for me. Not too boisterous, a little mysterious, perhaps even intimidating.. However as a DIRECT response to my OWN video, I shmoozed, I met fellow twitterati, I met other bloggers, other Atlantans, and yes..
I even met..
what could become..
the beginning of a beautiful (business) relationship.
The possibilities are ENDLESS..

Interesting. Why do I feel the sudden urge to go to a conference?

Wish you had approached all the speakers last night. Would have liked to have met you!!
Debi Z (August 21st, 2008 at 3:16 pm )
You’re so right - bloggers like these are mostly just not interested in monetizing their blogs. They blog for fun or out of conviction.
Me? I’d like to make lots of money on the internet (yeah, I know - I gotta get off wordpress.com).

I only just managed to get the video to work, and I loved it.
I think you would like this post that I wrote about 6 weeks ago about attending conferences http://tinyurl.com/5eyvjg

Networking is so important.Getting out of our comfort zone of in front of a screen and meeting others can be a refreshing change.

Danny (August 22nd, 2008 at 8:11 am )
Hi Andrea
I really wish you’d keep the sound level uniform on your videos - it would make them easier to watch when everybody is asleep.

I wonder what percentage of blogs are bloggers hectoring other bloggers about how to blog?
Andrea (August 24th, 2008 at 8:22 pm )
Danny,
Glad your kids sleep at all. Good start.
Mr. X - always a challenge eh? Listen up. I CANT do that, because I dont know YOUR industry? Are you a realtor? Or a WAHM? A blogger? Different conferences would meet your needs. However, thanks for reminding me of an impt point to bring up:
Dont ONLY consider going to conferences that relate specifically to your niche - because then you are all in the same market. Sometimes it’s a greater benefit to go to a different style of conference where you can find other worked up people in other fields and a real JV can come to life!

Hey Andrea,
I want to go with you again because we got some pretty good mojo going last time with our peers, LOL. But to be serious for a moment, I’m noticing that now that hundreds of fellow marketers have friended me on Facebook, I have over 30 right in my area of Philadelphia. AND I’m noticing a bunch of them attend, like, entrepreneur Meet Ups right here every month. So, for those of you who are served by Meetup.com, you may not need to travel or wait for the next big seminar to roll around. Go see what’s happening in your town now.Great post, as always, Andrea. Brava!
Mr X (August 26th, 2008 at 12:08 am )
Andrea - you know I am in the internet marketing industry.
What are the hot conferences in the coming months?
Andrea (August 26th, 2008 at 8:46 am )
Mr X,
What I know coming down the pike:
1) JV Alert in Vegas - in October I believe..
2) Big Seminar 12 in Atlanta - October 3-5
Then a little after Holiday season:
3) IM cruise
4) Affiliate Summit West in Las Vegas - Jan 11-13th (I am thinking of attending this one)Maybe I will add affiliate links later, if I can be bothered.
Feel free to add more if you know of any..
Andrea (August 26th, 2008 at 8:53 am )
Gail,
Great point. Sometimes its just the cost of a nice breakfast + some gas to hang out with local entrepreneurs.. of all types!
I have 2 such breakfasts this coming week.
In addition… drumroll.. check out what is happening soon - http://www.affilicon.com/ - affiliate marketing convention RIGHT HERE… I have heard from SEVERAL people, that some of the greatest affiliate marketers around are living here, and well, I certainly know my late partner (lump building up in throat), a local (who did most of his work in LA) helped big time to build up the local reputation.
Gail.. we must plan next opportunity..
